We were reading Dyscalculia, which is an interesting web-zine by the Desired Constellation about plurality, and discovered the notion of system-mate specific jewellery. The idea is that each person can have a piece of jewellery that only they wear, and it helps the stay focused on their presence in front, as well as helping others who know the system to identify who is in front.

I bought myself a ring yesterday at a market, and today, Fuzzy and I performed a small ritual to try to give it a little extra staying power. I cannot always stay in front reliably, so it would be nice if I could simply wear a ring and solve that problem. :)

The ritual feels a little personal to post online, but I will say that it involved a thematic altar cloth, an item from each of us, a candle, a singing bowl, and statements of trust and responsibility. I suppose I will update later about how well it worked!

Tonight I was able to participate in another ritual with the three of us, this time (for the first time) actually being the main participant among us.

When your people (or Others, if you like) come from another place, they often have their own sense of skills and interests, talents and abilities. For me, I consider singing to be one of mine. It's a magic kind of singing that is typically intended to calm and heal.

The ritual tonight involved a lot of singing, but because of the limitations of Fuzzy's body, it was difficult to really get to it. There is a difference between idea and execution in this meaty world. :) It was really interesting, too, working with others with actual sheet music and practice. I don't think I've ever done this sort of thing. So instead of worrying about it, I simply rolled with it. What a neat experience!

I suppose that's what I was really trying to get around to saying: things do work differently here. I recommend using it as a tool for learning, humility, and enjoying it for what it is. Relaxed and in a positive mood is almost always the best way to do meaningful magic.

I've been speaking of a lot of abstractions, so I thought I'd give a concrete example of how other-folk can participate in a ritual, and what it feels like. This is a description of one in which we participated tonight.

It's a personal belief of mine that an important aspect of magic is belief. (Everything I say, really, is a personal belief unless I've stated otherwise, so... Just keep that in mind. :)

The universe is a living, breathing thing. Humans are a collection of cells making up organs, making up you. Humans are also cells in countries, and the planet itself. The planet itself is an organism that is a living, changing, breathing thing that exchanges gases and magnetic fields with larger structures, and so on. This is our universe, and it has two levels.

One is akin to a person's reflexes: tap here, the leg jerks. Touch with something hot, the limb pulls away without thought. Then there are the emergent processes in a human, the mind, the ability to think, and so on. These are not so predictable as the reflexes: you can make the same input many times, and get a different response each time. For me, analogously on the universe level, this is magic.
