We are working on a podcast based on this blog, now. This is following on a good run on our other project (Multiplicity 101 podcasts, for Plural Activism), so we have high hopes. In the meantime, know that it's coming! And hopefully, a revitalisation of this blog.

We use a number of terms in these blogs, some of them common, some of them not as much. Other people on the internet may disagree with our usage of these terms, and that is okay. This is just how we use them.

Plural / multiple - a state of having more than one person/consciousness in a body. We like the word "plural" because it feels more inclusive. (Some would draw a line from "multiple" to "multiple personality disorder", which is not universally applicable to plural systems.) Note that "plural" may also refer to medians. (See link at the bottom.)

System - a neutral term referring to a body that is plural. Or more precisely, to the group that resides in it.

Headmate / systemmate / Other - A member of a plural system. The latter ("Other") is an odd term that we came up with in order to make people who are not plural comfortable with exploring the ideas we post from a magic perspective.

Inner-world / Other-world / headspace - A place that members of a system may reside and/or visit. "Inner world" and "headspace" are more common in the larger community, but we like "other world" because it doesn't have any implication about where it's located.

Front - Control over the shared body. This act is called "fronting". Likewise, you may have "co-fronting", where there is more than one.

DID/MPD - These are psychiatric diagnoses for someone who is plural, usually by way of trauma. Many visited a doctor/therapist because of feeling disordered or discommunicative, but not all of them are. It is a common misconception that all plural systems fall under this category, but many do not.

Neo-shamanic - This is a practice that involves, among other things, journeying into other worlds and speaking with their inhabitants. There's a lot more to it than that, but that's the part most people know. This refers to an adaptation of shamanic practices from aboriginal tribes, and could be considered everything from a cultural appropriation on the bad end, to a useful and enlightening practice on the good end. I prefer the term "neo-shamanism" because it describes the useful aspects of what is being talked about, without implying that it is the original practice.

Journeying - The act of mentally / astrally / etc travelling to another world and engaging that world, speaking to its inhabitants, etc, and bringing back the knowledge. I am, again, really simplifying here. If you want to know more, I recommend studying it as a separate topic from this.

These posts may also be interesting for definition purposes:

- What is plural magic? - also talks about system types.
- Median plurality

I've learned a lot in the past few years, and my opinions have changed about a number of things. I need to make a serious curation pass in this blog and try to clean up and improve some of the posts. So if you find something that looks wrong/broken/offensive, please tell me. I am not mean. :) And I want to learn from everyone.

We were reading Dyscalculia, which is an interesting web-zine by the Desired Constellation about plurality, and discovered the notion of system-mate specific jewellery. The idea is that each person can have a piece of jewellery that only they wear, and it helps the stay focused on their presence in front, as well as helping others who know the system to identify who is in front.

I bought myself a ring yesterday at a market, and today, Fuzzy and I performed a small ritual to try to give it a little extra staying power. I cannot always stay in front reliably, so it would be nice if I could simply wear a ring and solve that problem. :)

The ritual feels a little personal to post online, but I will say that it involved a thematic altar cloth, an item from each of us, a candle, a singing bowl, and statements of trust and responsibility. I suppose I will update later about how well it worked!

Greetings! I have not posted in ages, but that's mostly because I haven't had much to say. (And neither has anyone else, I guess.) Today I have two links of sites I've become very interested in.

Plural Activism - huzzah! A group dedicated to activism in the pursuit of the acceptance of plurality.

Healthy Multiplicity - A nice directory of sites from a functional plurality perspective. This is not to say that it excludes people who identify with MPD/DID, it is just links to sites of a plural-positive, we-are-okay-people bent.

We haven't had a lot to say lately, but everyone else is quite welcome to submit posts. There's a moderation queue for now, but I'll approve things fairly quickly. So don't be shy! And if there's something you don't want to post as yourself, just PM it to me and I'll post it anonymously for you.

I suppose I owe this post, considering that I wrote that ask on LivingPlural about the topic. >_>

I've drawn a lot of parallels between various modes of magic and being on here, including speaking to spirits, praying, animism, plurality/multiplicity, and neo-shamanic journeying. I admit it's a hand-waving sort of discourse, but I mostly want to point out that these things are not such vastly different exercises as people often think. They aren't the same thing (IMO), but they do share a number of traits, and there's a commonality running between them: there is one body out here, and more than one person in communication in there. This is what I call plural magic, wherever it "comes from".

I also believe that we can use these congruencies and similarities to learn from different modes of working, and that we can sometimes even pick up a new method for something that we do, which was previously applied only to another mode. For example, the same methods one might use to improve communication with a plural headmate may also be very useful when trying to increase the clarity with which one can speak to animistic spirits or deities. They're not the same thing, but they have congruencies from which we can synthesise new methods.

This, to me, is what's so exciting about the concept of this group. So! Today I wish to write about neo-shamanism and plurality cross-overs.

ExpandMore... )

And that is all, of course, a big opinion piece. :) But I hope that it's more clear why I am drawing these parallels and how they might benefit people who practise all of these various ways of communing with intelligences and spirits and Others besides themselves.

Continuing on from yesterday's topic (Shallow Co-fronting), this is another plural topic that can affect your magical work as well as your daily life. Many people don't realise that this applies to them, and understanding it can open up a whole new world of possibilities.

What is "median"? Well, you can read a lot more about it here, including pretty graphs, but the short version is that it's somewhere between plural and singlet (one term for someone who is not plural/median/etc). If you've ever heard someone talk about "putting on their game face", or showing one side of themselves to one group, and another side to another... that's the same sort of idea. Rather than several separate people, this is one person made up of separate people. To quote a very helpful line from Astraea's FAQ that I linked to above,

You might say something like "there are many of us, but we are really all Karen" or "aspects of Karen", etc.

If you ever had one of those colour-shifting pens from the 80s and 90s, think of that too. Press a button and a different ink comes out.

If you find yourself getting into "modes", where you almost feel like you're a different person even though you know you're not, then this may be a useful avenue of exploration for you.

That was long and somewhat rambly, but hopefully something in there was helpful! If it's interesting, you may also take a look at LivingPlural's median question list.

I struggle a little with coming up with a term for this topic I want to write about today, but perhaps that's a good enough approximation ("shallow co-fronting"). Today's post is all about the this-world end of things, with borrowing/sharing. My language here will be plural-heavy, because that's what I'm familiar with. I should also preface this with a larger than normal "this is just how it works for us, hope it helps"!

What do I mean by shallow co-fronting? Well, let me back up for a moment.

What do I mean by co-fronting? (Or "normal" co-fronting.) In general, co-fronting is when two or more people are very close to front (see above, re: borrowing/sharing). This is like when you are viewing a YouTube cat video, and several people are standing to the side or behind you, looking over your shoulder. They may be commenting to you or to each other, laughing at what you are laughing at (or sometimes things you aren't laughing at, and vice-versa). In the case of co-fronting, the people near you are your guides/Others/headmates. Say you're web browsing, sometimes you might type a comment for them (or they for you), choose a different thing to look at based on their interests, and so on. Just like many people sitting around a computer.

For some, I think co-fronting is the only term here, and it means what I'm about to talk about. For us, there is a distinction, though, which I'll explain below.

For us, when switching, we start out in that place. When we actually want to switch, it moves to something that's a lot like co-fronting, but even closer. In that situation, we are occupying the same "physical" space. Each of us feels as though it's our body, but only one of us is actually controlling it. I call this shallow co-fronting, because of how close everyone is to the surface of this world, in front. And it has a variety of potential uses in ritual!

ExpandMore... )

For some, this may come naturally, but for me, it's moving a little past "plural 101". :D I'll still file it there though.

I'm on a roll here. Two posts in one night. :)

A common theme that runs through many of our posts is visuality. You go to a place and you see people and places. Or you see Others nearby. These are all concepts laden with visualisation and sight.

For a variety of reasons, some people don't work this way. For one thing, you may have trouble moving your consciousness to another place to begin with. For another, you may simply not see things that way, for a number of possible reasons. Some people don't have other-worlds.

So I want to take a stab in the dark (har har) at some thoughts on another way of being, doing plural magic.

Black and white image that looks like a vase or two faces, depending on where you focus

We've been focusing a lot on a sort of this-world-centric message in regards to plural magic things, and the area that we know best personally, plural systems. It's implied in the very phrasing I've used to describe it, and this community. There's a body here, and in one way or another, more than one person inside...

For some, that's exactly the right way.

I wonder, though, if I've been getting this wrong in my broader message, or perhaps neglecting an entire side of the equation. One might also say that, for people like me at least, there's an other-world and a view into or out of it. It might be a more accurate description. I haven't explored it all, but I have whole continents in there, deserts, oceans, forests, cities... thousands of residents.

This is a much more common and comfortable view for many neo-pagans, even though it's essentially the same thing.

Tonight I was able to participate in another ritual with the three of us, this time (for the first time) actually being the main participant among us.

When your people (or Others, if you like) come from another place, they often have their own sense of skills and interests, talents and abilities. For me, I consider singing to be one of mine. It's a magic kind of singing that is typically intended to calm and heal.

The ritual tonight involved a lot of singing, but because of the limitations of Fuzzy's body, it was difficult to really get to it. There is a difference between idea and execution in this meaty world. :) It was really interesting, too, working with others with actual sheet music and practice. I don't think I've ever done this sort of thing. So instead of worrying about it, I simply rolled with it. What a neat experience!

I suppose that's what I was really trying to get around to saying: things do work differently here. I recommend using it as a tool for learning, humility, and enjoying it for what it is. Relaxed and in a positive mood is almost always the best way to do meaningful magic.

I thought I might take a moment to write some more about what exactly is meant by "plural magic".

I assume you know what I mean by "magic" since you're here, but I'll go ahead and give my definition. Basically magic is using your will, calling upon other or higher powers, or even just putting your determination toward effecting change. So this covers anything from the rather mundane "give it your all to change for the better" up to elaborate rituals and years-long working, what is often called "energy" or "chi", or other such forces that aren't measurable by scientific means at this point in time. To me, science is a way of interacting with the universe in a mechanistic, deterministic way, like tapping someone's knee to make their leg jump. Magic is speaking to the universe and interacting in a higher level, more psychological way, and asking for help.

Magic can also serve the purpose of a religious service, to reaffirm one's bond and comfort with the larger world(s). In this regard, even atheists can practice spirituality. (Marvelling at the intricacies of the universe, spending time stargazing, etc.)

The "plural" refers to not being alone in one's personal mental sphere, only during rituals/workings, or all the time. I'll write more about commonly recognised types below.

Hello! *waves* I'm that elusive Sparrow person, and I also go by Allie. A quick introduction, though I don't like to belabour the point: We think of me as something like fae, or that is a good metaphor, anyhow. I like to spend my time out in nature for the most part, but I also have an interest (along with my people) in studying the world, cultures, languages, and so forth. You might call us archivists. We like a good party, too -- fresh food, a bonfire, dancing, chanting, poetry...

I met Fuzzy by way of a sort of merged journeying. What finally brought her understanding that I was separate is actually the exact topic that I have to talk about today: recovering memories. She was visiting my people, and "she" suddenly started talking about things that she didn't know or understand.

Hopefully that was interesting and/or useful. :] If you have further questions or comments, feel free to post them! Or send me a Dreamwidth message if you like.

As I discussed in this post, sometimes you get to a point where it's silly or tedious to keep passing messages back and forth for your Others. (And sometimes, in the case of some kinds of rituals/magic/etc, it's not practical.) So here is a guide for helping them borrow.

This is based on some posts I made earlier on Tumblr and DW. It's a straightforward and step-by-step guide to letting your Others borrow you, to interact out here. It's based on my own methods and thoughts, of course, but others have found it useful.

This is going to be really long, sorry. But I want to be complete and give you the best chance you can at it.

As always, YMMV, do only if you feel completely comfortable, risks and consequences are yours to eat and savour.

Borrowing

My second topic that came out of reading Dove's post is in regards to what I've been calling "borrowing". This bears some resemblance (or is perhaps the same) as other concepts like "horsing", "riding", and "fronting". As a more mainstream example, I would also consider (just my opinion) the Abraham-Hicks pair to be practising borrowing and plural magic.

Outside the art, so to speak, this is actually a good example of something that cuts across many different scenarios and beliefs (shamanism, "speaking on tongues", channelling deities, plural/multiple groups, and so forth), and earns you a badge anywhere from "spiritual leader" to "put this one on stuffazine, stat", depending on culture, understanding, and so on. Inside the art, this is a subject that ranges from really mundane to really controversial, depending on your spiritual bent, your personal psyche, etc. But it's fundamental to us (and IMO, the topic), so I'm going to cover it.

Standard disclaimers apply: YMMV, caveat emptor, take responsibility, not my fault, etc... :)

I actually had an idea for two separate topics from Dove's previous post, and I wasn't sure if I wanted to combine them or not, but I guess I'll go ahead with two posts and write the second later.

A pretty fundamental question is, how can you find and communicate with other-space and other-folk? Guides, familiar spirits, and so on. It's different for every person, so all I can really do is give my experience and hope something clicks for you.

Hello~! <waves> I've wanted to contribute something for a little while, but I guess I haven't had very much on hand to talk about. We thought of one the other day, though, so I'll give it a try.

First, a short introduction: I go by Dove (the one FuzzyJayling referred to earlier), and also Annie. I try not to put too fine a point on what I am precisely, because I think it invites stagnation (and argumentation). And more to the point, I'm still trying to understand that, myself. :) But the archetype of relevance for me is an angel, or perhaps a "celestial" is more apropos. A helper to the divine. As many humans stretch for the divine, I am, a little ironically, stretching for humanity. ^^ I wish to understand and experience. Perhaps one time or another, I'll be born here, too. But that's neither here nor there.

You know, I'm going to call her Fuzzy. :D

We have a long history by way of a number of rituals, journeys, and dreams. She first met me in a dream, and then later, during a journey, we actually spoke consciously for the first time. I think that she saw me as another part of herself, perhaps a past life, or a personal guide, or even her guardian angel. I can't say that any of that is wrong, really. I just don't know.

This goes back a little bit to what she wrote earlier, about Credulity, as well as (depending on your beliefs and experiences) a general sense that the thing you're talking to may not be the thing you think you're talking to. You want to know that you're receiving true advice/conversation, and not the fears of your subconscious, or (if you believe in them) something malicious trying to fool you. This is doubly important when you start to talk about letting them borrow you and influence your magic in this world. So we've developed some authentication systems, so to speak.

ExpandGet the rest, read all about it! :) )

I guess I ended up writing from more of the out-here perspective after all. ^^; I'm not as good of a writer as Fuzzy (a little verbose and unorganised), but I hope that was helpful!
